The Magnolia Hotel & Spa is committed to operating our hotel in a sustainable fashion

Our Mission:

As an award-winning boutique hotel, The Magnolia Hotel & Spa is committed to a level of excellence in delivering luxurious, personalized service, in addition to contributing to the larger Victoria tourism and local community. As such, dedicating ourselves to upholding sustainability standards in our day to day operations is a key driver in our decision making.

As of March 2024 we are proudly Biosphere Certified! Biosphere Certification recognizes businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to sustainable practices, and who continue to grow towards that commitment. Sustainability Within Our Walls

The hotel management and employees are committed to operating the hotel in a sustainable fashion, leaving as little impact on the planet as possible. In delivering this commitment, we work to:
  • Responsibly manage the environmental impacts of our business
  • Reduce energy and water consumption through efficiency and best practices
      • A new HVAC energy-efficient model has replaced our previous system, reducing our carbon footprint by 76%.
      • Regular reviews of energy use and consumption to determine areas of improvement. 
      • Guests are encouraged to support our efforts by re-using their linens and towels. 
  • Minimize waste and pollution
      • Guests and employees have access to filtered water in lieu of offering plastic water bottles. This filtered water station saves over 50,000 plastic bottles per calendar year. 
      • We offer six electric vehicle parking spots set up with charging stations to encourage electric vehicle use
      • Staff are encouraged to either cycle, walk or take public transport to work; we support this by offering secure bike parking and staff showers. 
      • The administration office, the restaurant service area, housekeeping and the staff room are equipped with separate recycling bins that encourage appropriate recycling disposal.
      • We properly recycle all Nespresso pods from guest rooms and offices.
  • Comply with all applicable environmental regulations
  • Appropriately handle and minimize use of hazardous substances
      • All housekeeping and restaurant cleaning supplies are WHMIS-compliant, ensuring employees & guests’ health and safety is a top priority.  
      • The Engineering Department is in charge of collecting and appropriately disposing of the batteries and electronic waste around the building. 
  • Factor environmental considerations into purchasing decisions
      • The Courtney Room fosters partnerships with local farmers and food & beverage suppliers to ensure our environmental footprint stays as local as possible.
      • The Courtney Room offers metal straws for guests to reduce the use of plastic and reduce non-biodegradable waste.
  • Engage our guests in reducing our environmental impact
    • The hotel provides complimentary in-house filtered water, bottled in refillable glass bottles, in the rooms.
    • Guests are offered an option to decline housekeeping & turndown services. 
    • Guests at Magnolia Hotel & Spa have an opportunity to discover the surrounding areas on foot or bicycles (offered complimentary at the hotel) by following our curated trails, expertly crafted by our front office team.
    • The hotel’s front office supports sustainable tourism operators and local eateries by providing recommendations of local establishments to the guests.

Community Commitments

It takes a village, so inside and outside the property we explore opportunities to help engage our staff and build spirit amongst the community.
  • We have established tools and guidelines to ensure we foster a culture of diversity and inclusion. 
  • We regularly support charitable causes through the participation in fundraisers and donation of room nights and amenities for auctions. 
      • Participate regularly in the BC Hospitality Foundation Victoria Golf Tournament  
      • In the last year, we have donated room nights to the following causes and more:

        • Annual UNICEF Water for Life Gala
        • Hungry Hearts Gala
        • Heart Transplant Home Society 
        • Pink Shirt Day Luncheon
        • Victoria Hospice – Fashion for Compassion

        • BC Hospitality Foundation 
    • We are official community partners with the Good Night Out Program as of Spring 2023. 
      • The Courtney Room team received the Good Night Out training that focused on supporting the employees to build and improve their own prevention and response capacities to keep patrons and workers safe. The primary goal of Good Night Out Program is to help mitigate the risk of sexual violence being perpetrated, normalized or going unnoticed in the hospitality industry environment.
    • We support local communities in need through the donation of gently used linens and toiletries to locally based charity companies. These companies ensure that products get into the hands of those who need it most. 
  • We encourage employees to live active, healthy lifestyles
    • Employees are encouraged to participate in the annual Times Colonist 10K in the spring. 
    • We plan regular activities based around team building and physical activity such as volleyball games, outdoor sports and more. 
    • Employees are encouraged to bike, walk or run to work. We offer a secure bike lockup, onsite showers and lockers to secure personal belongings.
